  • The uploaded files will be truncated (cut short) back down to the original limit of 8MB.

I cancelled my subscription two days ago but my songs still play to the end. I cancelled because of copyright reasons because the label I'm now signed to don't want me to have full length versions on my player. This should've been an easy solution to shorten the songs that are over 8MB.

If you are trying to only play samples of your songs, you will need to upload samples of your songs rather than the full version.

Yeah but when I cancelled that service it said that all songs over 8MB will be automatically truncated but that hasn't happened. That was why I did it, so that I'd save time not having to upload shorter versions of songs over 8MB. But then obviously I'm going to change the files that are shorter myself. Basically what I'm asking is why have I still got that service when I've cancelled it? Although it's not listed as activated I've still got files over 8MB that play in full. You've even said in a comment above (3 months ago) that files will be truncated but that's not happened so really I'm still using that service (which is no use to me now) for free.

  • I assume this is a bug. I will alert the developers and have them make sure to truncate the songs. Can you provide a link to your ReverbNation profile so I can give them an example?

  • Yeah sure. I wouldn't normally complain about getting something for free but there was a point to cancelling it.

Just to clarify for myself and other readers:

It seems one or both of you may be misusing the term "truncated", which means "to shorten" or "to cut shorter".

A 320 kbps .MP3 file of 0:03:00 minutes length is the same length as a 128 kbps .MP3 file of 0:03:00 minutes length, or a .WAV file of 0:03:00 minutes length.

"Time" is a measurement of "duration", and remains constant (the same) in all three examples.

So, when you say that a song will be "truncated" to 8MB, you are talking about the overall size of the file.

For our purposes, that means that a 320 kbps file will be converted to a lower-quality file.

That has nothing to do with "truncating" or shortening song files.

I know I have never seen any statement on Reverb Nation that promises to "shorten" my songs if I discontinue Mega Song Storage.

The only time I have used 30 second clips was as a part of my retail submission, so that retailers would have the preview clip made for them.

That WAS a big waste of time, as the larger retailers have decided they know my songs better than me, and they have made some really stupid custom clips from my songs,
    • If you have a song that is, say, 20 MB in size, and then you unsubscribe from Mega Song Storage, your song will be cut off at the point in which the upload would have reached 8 MB. The quality remains the same, as does the file, but the additional 12 MB that you had previously uploaded is removed, so a song that once played all the way through will no longer play in its entirety. This can be fixed by re-uploading the file in a lower quality (which decreases the file size as well). Hope this helps clarify!

Yeah, that's clear. Crazy, but clear. It sounds punitive to me; punishment for not using the service anymore. I do a lot of sound file editing, and I know that it's less work for me to convert a 320 kbps file to a 128 kbps file, then it would be for me to use my audio editing software to "chop" off a piece of the song. You guys would only chose to do so if you were trying to make things hard on us. There is no rational reason for doing that.

Okay...I take it all back :-)
I had once been told that if I had my songs "truncated" and then re-uploaded smaller files, I would lose my stats for those songs.
    Doesn't seem to be happening.
I've now edited about 8 of my songs and then rechecked stats. All "seem" to be there.
I will recheck in a few days.
MEANWHILE, it seem that for standard pop/rock/country songs (even up to 4 minutes) 256 kpbs MP3 files will fit under the 8 mb limit.
I certainly can't hear the difference between that and the 320 kpbs files I had up before.
This IS a bit of a pain, redoing everything.
    But, at least it's possible.
AND, in one case, I was actually able to find a better master WAV file to convert from, and now THAT ONE song sound better.
Sorry for sounding off so much before.
