ReverbNation has introduced a metric that helps Artists understand their overall 'brand value' and how it is growing across the entire digital realm. This metric takes into account the total engagement of the Artist across their entire base of fans and listeners, as well as their ability to convert casual listeners into "Fans" that can be contacted.

    What It Measures

    Reach
The number of unique people touched by the Artist's content, which typically lives within social networks, blogs, home pages, etc. This factor includes unique listeners, watchers of video, registered fans, size of their mailing list, etc. It could be described as the total potential fan base, and captures an element of effort on the part of the Artist and their Fans to spread their content and reach more people.

    Influence
The reaction of those people exposed to the content. This factor includes number of songs or videos played per listener, number of unique times the listener was engaged with the content, play-through percentage on songs, total engagement time, email open rates, etc. It could be described as the merit of the Artist's content.

    Access
The ability of the Artist to access those fans directly, and message to them. This factor includes the rate at which listeners/friends convert to registered fans of the Artist or joining their mailing list, giving the Artist the ability to speak to them directly. It could be described as the familiarity the Artist has with their fan base.

    Recency
All of the above factors are weighted by how recently the activities have taken place. Because of this, Band Equity can be used as a way to identify how promotional strategies affect fan relationships in the aggregate, closing the loop on understanding the cause and effect of an Artist's popularity.

Important things to keep in mind:

    1. The formula for Band Equity is the same for every artist on the site to ensure a level playing field.

    2. Band Equity encompasses almost everything possible on the site, not just the stats everyone sees available in regards to artists. Band Equity includes not only things like plays, fans, and widget hits, but also more in-depth statistics such as promoter plays, and the percentage of fans who open your emails. All of these things and others help you accumulate band equity points.

    3. Recency is a very key factor in BES. While you could be adding fans, plays, etc from the previous day, if you are not adding them at the same rate which you were a few weeks ago, your score could be affected. Roughly the last two weeks of your activity is important to consider.

    4. It's tough to continue to grow your promotion every single day. Every now and then, you will see stagnant scores. This is not cause for huge alarm.

If you are wondering why your rank has decreased:

    1. You may be gaining band equity points, but if an artist behind you on the charts has been more active or attained more stats recently, it is possible their score could leapfrog you, despite your score having risen as well. Remember to stay active in promoting your music, and you should see returns.

    2. In order to accumulate chart positions on ReverbNation, a band must be active on ReverbNation. If an inactive band suddenly becomes active, and their total number of band equity points is larger than the amount of points you have, then they will appear above you in ranking.

If you have questions about your specific score, email support@reverbnation.com. Please include a link to your Reverbnation profile. Also, please make sure you have reviewed all of the information above.
